It is important that your dog’s nails are clipped regularly to keep its feet healthy and to allow it to stand, walk and run unimpeded and pain free.

Your dog’s nails should be reasonably short and not be curling under the foot when standing upright. However, if they do curl under, your dog’s nails need to be clipped.

Dog Nail Clipping

Dog Nail Clipping Is Essential

Dog nail clipping is essential for maintaining good health. If a dog’s nails are allowed to grow, they will curl over into a spiral shape; walking will become increasingly painful to the dog as they grow, putting pressure on the dog’s toes. Uncut nails may curl so far that they pierce the paw pad, leading to infection and debilitating pain.

A dog’s nail contains a blood vessel and nerve, the quick, which can grow long as the nails grow. This can sometimes make it difficult to clip the nails without making them bleed. If your dog’s nails are not trimmed on a monthly basis the quick will continue to grow along with the nail, making it almost impossible to cut properly. Ideally there should be a few millimetres of white nail after the pink of the dogs quick.
